A Pair of Staffordshire Pottery Leaping Stags - circa 1870
Made by Sampson Smith of Longton.
Another marvellous pair of Staffordshire animals.
Here we have a lovely pair of leaping Stags
being chased by hounds.
Beautifully described by Anthony Oliver in his book
"Staffordshire Pottery the Tribal Art of England"
"It is hard to believe such beauty on motion was achieved
with a simple two-piece mould,
and yet the potter has captured the moment
like a high speed modern camera".
Here we have another example,
late crude pairs can often be found.
This a lovely pair.
They are in good condition
with restoration to a beak in the front leg
of the right hand Stag.
Height: 11.5 inches
