A Staffordshire figure of William Shakespeare - circa 1845
William Shakespeare celebrated playwright and poet.
Widely regarded as the greatest writer in the history of the English language.
Born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon,
Shakespeare is often called England's national poet.
Well respected throughout his lifetime,
his reputation rose to it's current status in the 19th Century.
The Victorians worshipped Shakespeare,
yes our Staffordshire Potters, recorders of our social history,
produced numerous figures of him - this is one of my favourite.
This is a lovely quality figure,
excellent modelling, good enamel colouring,
brilliant cobalt blue and a fine glaze.
The figure is in good condition,
only a small chip to the handle of the large jar.
The gilding a little rubbed.
and there is no restoration.
