A Staffordshire Figure the Death of Nelson - circa 1840
Lovely quality example of the Death of Nelson.
A truly great Englishman, the greatest ?
Nelson was born on 29th September 1758 in Norfolk.
He joined the navy aged 12, becoming a captain at 20.
From 1794 to 1805, under Nelson's leadership,
the Royal Navy proved its supremacy over the French.
Nelson was wounded on several occasions,
losing his right arm and the sight of his right eye.
On 21st October 1805, as Commander-in-chief in his flag-ship the Victory,
Nelson sent out his famous signal;
"England expects that every man will do his duty".
Nelson led the attack which resulted in our greatest maritime victory,
The Battle of Trafalgar,
over the combined French and Spanish fleets.
During this attack he was killed by a French sniper,
his body was preserved in Brandy,
brought home to England and given a state funeral.
This is a wonderful Staffordshire figure,
superbly modelled,
loads of colour,
cobalt blue everywhere,
it's history, it's Nelson
and I love it.

the modelling is superb,
the colouring is exceptional,
the faces are fantastic,
the figure has a lovely glaze
and there is a very nice gilt script title.
There is no damage.
There is restoration to the enamels,
mainly to the black.
