A Staffordshire of a Begging Sailor - circa 1854
Another really classic Staffordshire Figure.
Made during the Crimean War,
Our British sailors were heroes
and our potters made many figures to represent them.
This figure titled "Begging Sailor" is probably the most iconic.
A brilliantly coloured
and superbly modelled early example,
difficult to find such a nice unrestored one.
It must have the best and cleanest gilding
on a raised title I've seen.
This lovely figure had been in the same Welsh village
since Victorian times.
There is no damage.
Some flaking of the black enamels
and no restoration.
Height: 17 inches.
