A Pair of Staffordshire Figures Dick Turpin & Tom King - circa 1845
The legendary highwaymen
The story of Dick Turpin and his horse Black Bess,
with his partner in crime Tom King,
was brought back to life in 1834 in the Harrison Ainsworth novel Rockwood.
This led to many theatrical productions throughout England
and became a frequent part at Astley's famous amphitheatre in London.
A delightful and true pair of Staffordshire Figures.
Full of enamel colours,
with underglaze black and cobalt blue,
This is the rarer of the models in this style
featuring straight legs on the horses.
They are in excellent condition,
there is no restoration.
