A Staffordshire Figure of Napoleon Bonaparte circa 1845

Born in Corsica in 1769,
Napoleon was appointed French Commander-in-chief in 1795.
After many glorious victories he was proclaimed Emperor in 1804.
Napoleon became dictator of Europe,
but following his disastrous invasion of Russia,
then defeat in the Peninsular war, he was forced to abdicate
and was sent to the island of Elba.
His final defeat was to the British and Prussian armies
led by the Duke of Wellington, at the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Napoleon was banished to St Helena,
where he died in 1821.
This superb figure is very rare and has great provenance.
The modelling is excellent in this more complicated version,
it is brightly painted with very rich gilding.
It is in marvellous condition with no damage,
only minor restoration to the enamels.
