A Staffordshire Figure of William Palmer - circa 1856

The infamous Murderer, Doctor William Palmer
"the Rugeley Poisoner"

William Palmer was a Doctor,
with practise at Rugeley in Staffordshire.
He poisoned a number of people,
including his wife in 1854, his brother the following year
and finally his best friend John Cook in December 1855.
After an investigation he was tried and convicted
at the Old Bailey in London of the murder of Cook,
on 14th June 1856 he was hanged outside Stafford Prison
in front of a crowd of 30,000 spectators.

see "Murder in Pottery" Dr.William Palmer
in the SFA Newsletter of Nov. 2015
by Andrew Houghton.

You will not find a better example.

Very finely modelled, nicely painted,
a lovely clean lead glaze showing a hint of blue,
immaculate gilding with that luscious cobalt blue coat.
A rare staffordshire portrait figure,
a fascinating history and nigh on perfect,
as it left the factory over 160 years ago.

It is in excellent condition,
there is no damage,
there is no restoration.

Height: 11.5 inches
