A Staffordshire figure of the Sultan of Turkey - circa 1854
A fine Crimean War figure of Abd-ul-Medjid
Abdul-ul-Mejid succeeded to the throne in 1839
and had a major influence in the Crimean war.
In 1854 a Staffordshire Pottery produced a superb pair of figures,
Lord Raglan and Abd-ul-Mejid (titled Sultan).
These figures are rare.
The inspiration for this figure of the Sultan
was an engraving in the London Illustrated news.
They slightly later used this model for a figure of Omar Pasha,
which is identicle apart from the title.
This wonderful figure is bright, colourful and beautifully made.
It is rare, full of history and full of character.
This is an excellent example, the best I have seen.
The modelling, painting and gilding is superb
and wonderful cobalt blue,
with a lovely glaze.
It is in very good condition with no damage
and only minor flaking to black enamels.
Height: 12.5 inches
